ANZAC DAY 2009 AT GALLIPOLI - 5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS

An in-depth small tour of the Gallipoli Battlefields for Anzac Day

The tour has been designed to give you a greater understanding of the events that led up to the decision to land Allied forces at Gallipoli and to enable you to see firsthand the significant battlegrounds of the campaign.

Your tour leader, William Willis, is an Australian who lived in Turkey for several years working first with the Turkish Government, then as manager of a Turkish tour company. Will, a Vietnam War veteran, has visited Gallipoli many times and has led Timeless Anzac groups for seven years. Will also lectures in World War I history and gives guest seminars at March 18 University, Canakkale.

The tour stays in an excellently located 4 star hotel in the heart of Istanbul’s old city, in the only boutique small hotel in Canakkale (the nearest main town to the Gallipoli National Park), travels in a comfortable modern air-conditioned vehicle and is also accompanied by our experienced, professional English-speaking Turkish guide. All meals and restaurant and hotel tips are included.

Day 1: Tuesday 21 April Istanbul

Arrive at hotel and after lunch transfer to the ferry terminal for an afternoon cruise on the Bosphorus. The focus of the tour will be on the strategic importance of Istanbul, or Constantinople as it was known in 1915, in both World War 1 and over past centuries.

Sights will include the Dolmabahce Palace, Rumeli Hisar Castle, Topkapi Palace and other notable buildings dating from the days of the Ottoman Empire.
In the evening we will eat at a local restaurant, Zinhan, and discuss the day’s tour.

Day 2: Wednesday 22 April Istanbul-Gallipoli

After breakfast we are picked up from our Istanbul hotel for the 5 hour coach drive along the European shore of the Sea of Marmara and Dardanelles to Gallipoli. This region featured prominently in the overall strategic decisions of the Gallipoli campaign. After lunch at a local restaurant in Eceabat we cross the Dardanelles at the famous “Narrows” and visit the city of Canakkale. Our visit includes a tour of the castle and the minelayer Nusrat that played a key role in the naval battle of 18 March 1915.
Dinner and overnight at Kervansaray Hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 3: Thursday 23 April Gallipoli Anzac Sites

Today we explore in depth the site of the Anzac battlefields. In the morning we will visit the museum of Kabatepe, Brighton Beach, Ari Burnu Cemetery, Anzac Cove, Shrapnel Gully, and Plugge’s Plateau. Lunch at Maidos Restaurant, Eceabat.

After lunch we travel to the high ground behind the landing point and overlooking Anzac Cove (Second Ridge) and visit Lone Pine, pass Quinn’s Post and Johnston’s Jolly, then stop at the Nek, Chunuk Bayir, and the site of Kemal Ataturk’s field headquarters on the Third Ridge.

Day 4: Friday 24 April Cape Helles and Suvla Bay

Today we complete the overall view of the Gallipoli Campaign. Our visit includes a stop at the small village of Bigali which was Ataturk’s headquarters early in the campaign and a drive through the sites where the Turkish army was based and its heavy artillery positioned. We then drive to Suvla Bay, site of the failed landing by the British New Army in August 1915.

After lunch at Kum Camping we travel to Cape Helles at the southern end of the peninsula. On the way we stop at the fascinating private museum in the village of Achitepe. At Cape Helles we visit the site of Turkish Memorial and of the British and French landings on April 25 1915. We return to our hotel for dinner before leaving for the Dawn Service. Rest at Anzac Hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Saturday 25 April Dawn Service-Istanbul

We go to Anzac Cove for the Dawn Service then we will travel to Lone Pine for the Australian Ceremony. You will be able to choose whether you prefer to walk or travel by bus to Lone Pine. Walking means 3km, largely uphill in cold weather amongst crowds but you are guaranteed to get to Lone Pine in time for the service. Going by bus is warmer and more comfortable but can be frustrating due to traffic jams.

The order and timing of the respective services vary each year and are decided upon in consultation with the Australian, New Zealand and Turkish Governments. Final arrangements for services are made in late March to early April each year. (B, L)

As the number of visitors, traffic and parking problems are ever increasing, it is normal that there will be walk from where the coach stops to the ceremony. Older participants in particular should be aware that the walk to ceremonial site from the coach can be long although we make every effort to get you as close as possible. The Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs provides transport and seating at the Dawn service for aged and infirm participants. Advise us if you require this service.

The wait for the Dawn Service to begin in the open in cold early morning weather can also be lengthy. Dress warmly and comfortably and take a small torch. A space blanket is highly recommended. A boxed lunch is included and we stop for dinner before returning to Istanbul late in the evening.
