DEPARTS MADRID / WEDNESDAYS: April 2012 - March 2013
DAY 1 (Wednesday): MADRID / TRUJILLO / LISBON
Depart from our bus terminal at 8:00am. Travel via the beautiful medieval town of Trujillo, the birthplace of Spain’s greatest conquistadors. Includes a stopover at the beautiful and monumental Plaza Mayor. Continue to the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, for accommodation at your selected hotel.
DAY 2 (Thursday): LISBON
Breakfast is followed by a half day panoramic sightseeing tour which includes a drive down Liberty Avenue to Rossio, the very heart of the city and Alfama, the oldest and most picturesque Quarter. Continue your drive along the river-side to Black Horse Square. Next stop is Belem Tower which includes the chance to enjoy some local food favourites straight from the oven. Next a stopover at the Monument to the Discoveries before continuing to Jeronimos Monastery, a marvel of stone lacework, then the Coach Museum.
An afternoon at leisure allows for your own exploration of the history, culture, excellent restaurants and the style of Lisbon, one of Europe’s oldest cities. Timeless suggests a visit to the Gulnbenkian Foundation, a very highly rated museum of art, sculpture and paintings, etc. This is a must of lovers of museums and culture. Perhaps a tour (optional) to Sintra, Cascais and the Estoril Coast. In the evening consider a club or restaurant to experience the “Fado”, the soulful, almost melancholy unique Portuguese singing style. Accommodation.
DAY 3 (Friday): LISBON / FATIMA / LISBON
After breakfast depart for an important centre of pilgrimage for the catholic faith, Fatima, the site of the famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary.
Statues of Saints surround the Neo-Baroque Limestone Basilica, 65 metre tower and esplanade which are twice the size of St Peter’s Square. The Chapel of the Apparitions marks the site of the first apparition. Free time has been allocated to visit the shrine. Return to Lisbon for overnight accommodation.
DAY 4 (Saturday): LISBON / CACERES / CORDOBA
Following breakfast depart for Caceres, founded by the Romans in 25BC, the old town section of this beautiful city invites travellers to enjoy medieval streets and plazas, towers and battlements, palaces, churches and convents. Free time on arrival allows time for some exploration or perhaps a chance to enjoy the highly regarded local cuisine and wines at one of the many inns and restaurants located at the beautiful and monumental Plaza Mayor.
Continue to Cordoba, one of the most influential cities of the ancient world and oldest settlements in Spain. On arrival dinner at your hotel.
DAY 5 (Sunday): CORDOBA / SEVILLE
After breakfast a sightseeing program includes the magnificent 8th century mezquita, mosque and cathedral. Visit the historic Jewish quarter, stroll through the narrow winding streets, decorated courtyards and patios of flowers.
Next is Seville, a wonderful city, regarded by some as the romantic capital of Andalucía.
After lunch, free time to explore and understand why Seville is the setting for the operas Carmen, Don Juan and Figaro, as well as being the home of the fiery flamenco, you feel it – in the narrow streets, squares, courtyards and colourful patios of the Santa Cruz district. Overnight.
DAY 6 (Monday): SEVILLE
After breakfast a half day city tour that includes the cathedral, where the remains of Christopher Columbus lie, the Alcazar, the Barrio Santa Cruz district with its white alleyways and patios and the beautiful Maria Luisa Park before strolling though the gardens and hand painted tiles seen at the Plaza de Espana.
An afternoon at leisure to explore the city, perhaps a river cruise along the Guadalquir or a visit to the pseudo reconstruction of Pontius Pilates House (Casa de Pilatos), which began in the 16th century, and presents an interesting blend of mudejar, gothic and renaissance styles with its beautiful patio and gallery, elegant fountain and ornamental minerva statues. In the evening maybe visit one of Seville’s many tapas bars or a flamenco show.
Accommodation is based on half board.
DAY 7 (Tuesday): SEVILLA / RONDA / COSTA DEL SOL
Following breakfast, travel the route of the white villages including a stopover in Ronda, located over a deep ravine cut into rock 100 metres the Rio Tajo, Ronda has a spectacular location, this town simply invites visitors to wander along fascinating streets and alleys, or relax at one of the local cafes, perhaps overlooking the gorge, enjoying the beautiful regional cuisine and fine local wines while watching the world go by.
Continue to the Costa del Sol and dinner at your hotel.
DAY 8 (Wednesday): COSTA DEL SOL / GRANADA
Breakfast and free time to enjoy the wonderful beaches at a destination that offers sandy beaches lapped by the waters of the Mediterranean.
Next is Granada, the final stronghold of the Moorish Kingdom in 1492, a glorious city immortalised in song and verse, overlooked by the majestic snow covered Sierra Nevadas, Granada is home to one of the great monuments – the Alhambra and Generalife Garden which showcases Moorish palaces and towers and gardens, including terraces, pools and fountains in an incomparable setting – the Alhambra is special. Inclusion on your sightseeing program.
Accommodation includes dinner.
DAY 9 (Thursday): GRANADA / TOLEDO / MADRID
After breakfast travel to the Imperial city of Toledo – a national monument of Spain, where the cultures and great religions of Spain (Christian, Moorish and Jewish) have left behind a legacy that makes Toledo a special place to visit.
After lunch, your sightseeing tour includes Spanish art, history and spirituality, helping to uncover some secrets of this historical and artistic city.
Next is Madrid – end of tour.
