10 DAYS ANDALUCIA & MOROCCO (E-2610)
DEPARTS MADRID / SATURDAYS : April 2012 - March 2013
DAY 1 (Saturday): MADRID / CACERES / CORDOBA
Depart from our bus Terminal at 08:00 a.m. towards the region of Extremadura and arrival to Cáceres. Travel via the beautiful medieval town of Trujillo, the birthplace of some of Spain’s greatest Conquistadors, which includes a stopover at the beautiful and monumental Plaza Mayor. Continue to Caceres: founded by the Romans in 25BC, the old town section of this beautiful city invites travellers to enjoy medieval streets, plazas, towers, battlements, palaces, churches and convents. Free time on arrival may allow time for some exploration or perhaps a chance to enjoy the highly regarded local cuisine and wines at one of many inns and restaurants. Next is Cordoba one of the ancient world’s most influential cities and oldest settlements in Spain. Dinner at hotel.
DAY 2 (Sunday): CORDOBA / SEVILLA
After breakfast there is a city sightseeing program including a visit to the truly magnificent 8th century Mezquita, Mosque and Cathedral and the historic Jewish quarter. Continue to Seville, a wonderful city, regarded by some as the romantic capital of Andalucía. Visitors can understand why this city is the setting for the Operas Carmen, Don Juan & Figaro as well as being the home of the fiery flamenco, they feel it, in the narrow streets, squares, courtyards and colourful patios of the Santa Cruz district. Lunch is followed by an afternoon of leisure. Maybe one of Seville’s many tapas bars or perhaps a flamenco show. Overnight.
DAY 3 (Monday): SEVILLA
After breakfast a tour of the Cathedral, where the remains of Christopher Columbus lie, the Alcazar, the Barrio Santa Cruz Quarter with its white alleyways and patios and the beautiful Maria Luisa Park before strolling through the gardens and hand painted tiles seen at the Plaza de Espana. An afternoon at leisure to explore the city perhaps a river cruise along the Guadalquir or a visit to the pseudo reconstruction of Pontius Pilates house (Casa de Pilatos), which began in the 16th century, and presents an interesting blend of mudejar, gothic and renaissance styles with its beautiful patio and gallery, elegant fountain and ornamental Minerva statues. Consider your own tour of this beautiful city. Accommodation is half board.
DAY 4 (Tuesday): SEVILLA / RONDA / COSTA DEL SOL
Following breakfast, the touring coach travels the route of the white villages including a stopover in Ronda, a spectacular town with Celtic origins, which is located over a deep ravine, cut into rock, 100meters above the Rio Tajo. Free time is allocated so you may visit the Plaza de Toros, one of Spain’s oldest bullring dating back to 1785, the gardens of Casa del Rey Moro from where steps descend to the base of the gorge or perhaps, a glass of local wine and regional food at the restaurant located right on the edge of the gorge. Ronda is a town that simply invites visitors to wander through fascinating streets and alleys. Continue to the Costa del Sol for dinner and overnight.
DAY 5 (Wednesday): COSTA DEL SOL / TANGIER / FES
Following breakfast your travel from the Costa del Sol to Algeciras or Tarifa. Continue by ferry to Tangier for a panoramic tour of “the Princess of the North,” the city of Hercules which has been an established trading port back to the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. Then continue to the imperial city of Fes. Dinner and accommodations.
DAY 6 (Thursday): FES
The most ancient of the Imperial Cities, founded in the 8th century Fes has become the spiritual heart and cultural centre of Morocco. Following breakfast, a morning sightseeing program includes the Kairouyine University and mosque, the Nejjarine fountain, the souk where craftsman in Arab, Jewish, and Andalucía quarters still work in ancient ways and a visit to the dyers and tanners quarters where sheep and goatskins are coloured and processed into fashionable garments.
An afternoon at leisure allows visitors to discover and explore Fes themselves which can be achieved in hours or days, this is a wonderful city with a fabulous “World Heritage” medieval medina.
Accommodation is based on half-board.
DAY 7 (Friday): FES / MEKNES / RABAT / TANGIER
Breakfast. Depart for Meknes, the Imperial city founded at the end of the 17th Century by Moulay Ismail, where a panoramic tour includes the Royal stables (Hari Souani), the Granary, the old Medina, Palaces and historic buildings including the impressive 25kms of walls that still surround the city then continue to Rabat, capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. Sightseeing city tour visiting the Mausoleum of Mohamed V and the Hassan Tower. After the visit continue to Tangier for dinner and accommodation.
DAY 8 (Saturday): TANGIER / COSTA DEL SOL
After breakfast departure to board the ferry and cross the Strait back to Spain. Continue to the Costa del Sol for dinner at your selected hotel.
DAY 9 (Sunday): COSTA DEL SOL / GRANADA
After breakfast travel to Granada, the final stronghold of the Moorish Kingdom a glorious city. Immortalised in song and verse, overlooked by the majestic snow covered Sierra Nevadas, Granada is home to one of the world’s great monuments – The Alhambra and Generalife gardens.
Your tour showcases Moorish palaces and towers and gardens that include terraces, pools and fountains in an incomparable setting. The Alhambra is special.
After your tour, if time permits, maybe a visit to Alcaiaceria, a reconstructed Moorish bazaar and perhaps in the evening enjoy one of the many bars and restaurants frequently located in lively little plazas or explore the narrow winding streets of ancient Albaicin and the Sacromonte famed for its gypsy flamenco and caves. Accommodation includes dinner.
DAY 10 (Monday): GRANADA / TOLEDO / MADRID
Breakfast before travelling to the Imperial city of Toledo – a national monument of Spain, where the cultures and great religions of Spain (Christian, Moorish & Jewish) have left behind a legacy that makes Toledo a special place to visit. After lunch, your sightseeing tour includes Spanish art, history and spirituality, helping to uncover some secrets of this historical and artistic city.
